Lakai
→ photo reportage about the reality on two wheels
→ ‘Lakai’ used to refer to servants or messengers. Today, the term applies to all those people who ride their bikes every day for others and often remain invisible. For this project, I accompanied Marie, who lost her job as a project manager during the pandemic and started working as a driver for Lieferando in Hamburg. The photos show her everyday life between traffic, restaurants and front doors. At a time when many people were seeking distance, she tirelessly delivered food to the city in lockdown.
→ ‘When I wear my orange jacket and backpack, I suddenly get a lot less respect. In traffic, people don't give me right of way, I often get shouted at or even hit by a car.’
→ The project not only makes Marie's story visible, but also the reality of many people who depend on their bikes: food delivery workers, postal workers and couriers. It takes a look at how they are perceived by society and at the same time shows the dangers cyclists face on the roads every day.
